In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Legendary Ultimate Breaks & Beats series we teamed up with Breakbeat Lou for this limited offering.

"Breaks" or "breakbeats" first emerged in the formative days of the early 1970s, when a DJ in the Bronx, New York named Kool Herc popularized a sound based around the hard funk drums of James Brown. Herc kept the dancefloor jumping by isolating parts of the records with the "breakdown" - typically in the form of a percussion solo. Since these sections would always generate the most excitement from the dancers, why not continue the energy using two copies of the record? Herc's cutting-edge practice of extending the break led to the emergence of "break boys" (aka b-boys), who would take the opportunity to showcase their best dance moves during these passages, hence the term "break dancing."
This brilliantly effective DJ technique continued to evolve, as pioneers such as Afrika Bambaataa drew a big following with obscure, funky records that one else thought to play. Grandmaster Flash mastered the technical aspects of the form, advancing the art of playing the same section of a song endlessly on two turntables - allowing MC's to keep the crowd entertained by chanting phrases over the beats.

While James Brown songs provided a rich source of tight, hard grooves to loop and rhyme over, the rapidly developing sound of Hip-Hop demanded innovation on an almost weekly basis, creating a huge demand for fresh breaks and catchy drums producers could manipulate. Enter Lenny Robers (R.I.P), a Bronx-based music afficionado, and in 1986 he created the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series with his editing partner Lou Flores aka Breakbeat Lou.

RUN DMC: RUN D.M.C
In a musical world where heated debates rage constantly, here is a statement that no one can dispute - Run-DMC is one of the most important and influential groups in rap history. Forming in the early '80s and guided by Russell Simmons (who was, of course, Run's brother), the three-man unit were lyrical and musical pioneers from their first, Larry Smith-helmed produced Run-D.M.C.. The album's sparse beats and aggressive rhymes were in sharp contrast with the light, funky sound that was popular in hip hop at the time. Clocking at about 40 minutes, this album is one of the first Hip Hop where every song was a certified class. "Sucker MC's", "Hollis Crew (Krush Groove 2)", "Hard Times", "Jam-Master Jay" you name it, each song you can hear how this album single handedly changed the face of music, not just Hip Hop.

RUDY RAY MOORE: THIS AIN'T NO WHITE CHRISTMAS
Rudy Ray Moore was a storyteller extraordinaire, a hilarious, low-down dirty man, and a legit trailblazer in the world of no-holds-barred, fuck-the-censors comedy.

This classic, live Christmas album shows Moore in the 1970s form that cemented his late-night legacy. Side 1 is for early evening listening, when family and respectable friends might still be around. (The dirty stuff is for the flip.) The song "Merry
Christmas, Baby" starts things off - a slow, dusty blues number bolstered by a wobbly but upright backing band. The song itself is PG, extolling the virtues of a caring partner and the joy of the season. Truth be told, it's a warm and wonderful holiday song.

With the band gently strolling behind him, he then lays into Christmas tales from childhood up through modern day trials, tribulations and hilarities. "I can remember when me and my brother were six years old," he says. "We hung our stockings up on the mantelpiece, and the health department made us take them down." Good old fashioned family fun.

But with the man also known Dolemite, the "down and dirty" is never far away. Side 2 is where things get good (and X-rated), for the late night listening pleasure. It all starts with Rudy retelling "The Night Before Christmas" - with his grooving backing band - in his trademark raunchy style, complete with mice and rats getting it on. Also included on this side is a psychedelic blues number, detailing Brother Rap's visit to heaven (to get dirty, of course). And it all finishes up with a thematically appropriate Christmas themed tale, with the term mtherf*cker used in potentially record-breaking numbers.

It's what you'd expect from the legendary, foul-mouthed, groundbreaking comedy legend. A perfect way to keep the Holidays from becoming too much of a Hallmark moment.

25TH ANNIVERSARY SKULL CD Bundle from @cypresshill & Colored Vinyl LP Bundle via @GetOnDownTweets

CYPRESS HILL 25TH ANNIVERSARY SKULL

PRE-ORDER NOW @ WWW.GETONDOWN.COM

Cypress Hill teamed up with Get On Down to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their 1991 debut with an ultra deluxe "25th Anniversary Skull" reissue. The First Edition is limited to 1,991 units.  Orders begin shipping in late September.

The entire set is housed in a unique, hard resin black skull - a faithful, 3-D physical recreation of the group's 1991 logo. A CD with remastered audio and a 100-plus page hardcover book are also included. The book features extensive liner notes by journalist Chris Faraone with input from B-Real, Sen Dog and DJ Muggs, and also includes full album lyrics and rarely seen photos provided by the group, as well as press clippings from 1991.

Cypress Hill's self-titled debut album was hard as nails, with very few pop concessions. There was humor, but it was laced by cackling, homicidal sneering. Not well known outside of the hardcore hip-hop scene at first, faces of the three group members weren't usually shown clearly in press photos; they preferred the shadows. As their first singles began hitting the airwaves and record racks, the press and music fans started to take notice. From the opening notes of the group's first single, "The Phuncky Feel One," to deeper album cuts like "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk" and "Tres Equis," it was clear that Cypress Hill was something different. And very, very dope.

Journalist and author Chris Faraone highlights the group's relationship in the reissue's liner notes saying, "[By the late '80s] the undisputed Cypress unit finally formed. B and Sen realized that their diametric styles - the latter's deep wrangle, the former's inimitable high notes - complemented one another righteously. By then Muggs had bangers in the bag, as well as industry experience from a jaunt with the New York duo 7A3. B and Sen waited while Muggs messed with 7A3, and in that time began to build the blueprint for their raucous and weeded no-holds-barred style. Besidesgetting schooled on industry pitfalls, Muggs had also grown into hip-hop's most formidable young producer, while straddling the bi-coastal gap."
When asked about his inspiration to write and rhyme, B-Real got candid with Faraone, saying, "All of the writing in relation to Cypress was based off of experiences, whether direct and living through them or the other guys, or stuff that we [had] seen through other guys in the trenches, when I was living that gangster lifestyle. It was the life we were living that we used as a backdrop."

Sen Dog sums up the group's incredible journey perfectly in the liner notes: "It's like, 'Goddammit, we actually went out there and did what we said we were gonna do.' That's one of the hardest things to do in the world, and we did it. Every once in a while, I'll look out at B when I'm on stage and say, 'We're still doing it.' [Our fist] record was respected by everyone in the business, and to meet people like EPMD [back then] and for them to love your shit, those are the things you never forget."
